Hi, I’m Sean Blanda

and I am the publisher of Sabbatical.

Sean in Oaxaca

In 2016, my wife and I got married and then promptly quit our jobs to travel and think about the next step in our lives.

Before departing for the trip, I spent weeks looking for guidance and advice for how to make the best use of this truly unique moment in my life. I was looking for something that acknowledged the value of being ambitious and working hard alongside the value of rest and reflection.

Instead, I mostly found advice on how to be a digital nomad and avoid work and commitment all together. Or "travel hacking” that didn’t quite align with how I saw the opportunities created by traveling.

Today, I believe that the ways we think of ourselves and our careers needs to be updated in a post-COVID world. We need new frameworks, role models, and advice.

This website and its related newsletter, interviews, essays, and guidebooks are a never-ending journey to be the guide I wish I had, constantly updated for the ever-changing modern career landscape. It’s informed by research, interviews, and a decade-plus of writing about careers, entrepreneurship, and media.

I’m glad you’re here — I suggest starting out by subscribing to the newsletter. And if you have a sabbatical story of your own, I’d love to feature you in an upcoming issue.
